Wisconsin State Championship Drag Race Results

The 120 cc Final at the Wisconsin State Snowmobile Drag Championships

Hodges, La Cosse, Thompson Sweep Drag Series Opener

In the Stock Classes of the Wisconsin State Championship Snowmobile Drags in Merrill, Wisconsin, it was all Tom Hodges. In the smaller Mod classes, it was all Matt La Cosse, and in the bigger Mod Classes, Shay Thompson spanked the competition.

Champion, Michigan’s La Cosse has had a target on his back in the Mid America Snow & Terrain Expert Racers (MASTERS) Racing Circuit for years. However his dominance was limited to the Modified Classes. In the MASTERS Racing Circuit Drag Series, LaCosse also brought a Stock Polaris to run in Stock 500 and Stock 600. Just like in the Mod Classes, LaCosse took the feature.

However in Stock 700, Stock 800, and Open Stock, the driver to beat again ths year is Lake Linden, Michigan’s Tom Hodges. Hodges swept all 3 of those Stock Classes on an Arctic Cat 700.

The crowd waited till the end of the day to see who would win the $500.00 in the Open Mod Class. The talk in the Pits and in the crowd during the 1st and 2nd round of Qualifying in the Open Mod class was how fast St. Germain, Wisconsin’s Brian Siekerczynski’s Yamaha Turbo 4-stroke was running. The question everyone wanted answered is how would Siekerzynski’s Yamaha do against Shay Thompson’s Ski-Doo.

In the Quarterfinals, Siekerzynski had clutch problems at the start, and was eliminated from the competition. Then right before the quarterfinal, LaCosse had problems with his Polaris 800 Mod, so he had to run his 440 Ski-Doo. With Siekerzynski having problems, LaCosse advanced to the Open Mod Final on his 440.

The other driver to advance to the Open Mod Final was Crystal Falls, Michigan’s Jeff Szanto. Szanto on a Ski-Doo made it to the Semi-Finals in Munising, Michigan last year. The former MASTERS Circuit Hillclimber made it to the finals in Merrill through a Last Chance Qualifier win over Iron River, Michigan’s, Louis Goldbach.

That set the stage for an Open Mod Final between Thompson, La Cosse, and Szanto. While Thompson was the favorite, the race turned out to be a lot closer then anyone expected when Thompson’s sled blew a belt 50 feet from the finish line.

Thompson’s sled coasted over the finish line, inches before LaCosse and Szanto.

Thompson also won the Mod 800 class, edging out LaCosse and Iron River’s Rudy Vincent in an all Ski-Doo final.

It wasn’t just Matt LaCosse in the LaCosse family that took home trophies, Nathan LaCosse won the 120 cc Feature. All in all, the LaCosses had a trailer-full of trophies. They took 4-First Place and 4 Second Place finishes.

A first in Snowmobile Drag Racing, a race between Chicken and Egg

For the first time in the history of Snowmobile Drag Racing, two big Chickens raced. Both were disqualified when they went out of their lanes and tried to run each other down. However the Egg had a slight lead over the Chicken at the 150 foot cones.

The MASTERS Racing Circuit Drag Series now moves to St. Germain, Wisconsin for Ice Drags on Sunday, January 23rd. The next Snow Drag in the points series will be in Sidnaw, Michigan, on February 12th.

Registration:
I WILL NOT take any Registrations for this Saturday’s Drag Races over the internet as of now, as I will be unable to receive them. You will need to make it to this Friday Night’s Registration at Ed and Sharon’s, starting at 7:00 pm CST. We will not be taking any registrations on Saturday Morning. If it is an emergency, you can call my cell phone at 906-236-1143 for Merrill ONLY.

You are advised to come early on Friday to park your Trailers in the Pits. We will have people on hand to show you where to park in the Pits. We recommend that you bring ski skins and/or a tow sled to take your sled from the pits to the staging area.

Reminder to parents that are entering children in the 120 cc class and/or drivers under the age of 18. Insurance regulations require that BOTH parents sign the Waiver of Liability. This is an insurance rule, I have no control over that.

The specific order of running the drags is going to be discussed at the Driver’s Meeting. The Stock Classes will run in the order of amount of registrations. The Stock Classes with the most amount of drivers entered, maximum of 15 per class, will go first. What has to be decided is if we are going to run little to big or big to little...that will be up to the drivers at the drivers meeting on Friday Night.

Don’t forget that ALL machines are required to have a tether. One of our drivers, Brian Siekerczynski, is bringing some tethers with him to sell. However he only has a limited amount of tethers. You will also be required to have a Saf-Jac/Tek Vest, along with a Snell 2005 Helmet, and eye protection. I do not have any Saf Jacs to rent out this year. The ones I rented out in the past were never returned.

Winternationals Hillclimb Registration Deadline is THIS SUNDAY, January 9th:

Absolutely NO Registrations for the Winternationals Hillclimb will be accepted after this Sunday. I will accept those that I get in the mail on Monday Morning. You will need to go to the website, www.mastersracing.net to get the Registration Form and the Rules. WISCONSIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Snow Drags, Merrill, WI this Saturday.

Last week G & J Concrete Construction used a bulldozer and tractor to work on the Drag Strips. They pushed snow on the track during the rain that Central Wisconsin received. After the rain, the temperatures dropped to single digits.

All 3 lanes on the track ARE VERY HARD. For some of you, this is good news, for others this is not. No matter what, the track is smooth.

This week the fencing will be put up.

The Pit area will bethe parking lot at Ed and Sharon’s, with the staging and paddock area being right by the starting line. We are asking everyone to park as close to each other as possible, we only have so much room. PLEASE do not have any other vehicle, other then your tow vehicle in the Pit area. Crew Vehicles need to be parked in the Fan Parking area. Fan parking will be across the highway.

Starting at 7:00 am CST, EVERY snowmobile will go through Tech. You will have the new MASTERS Sticker put on your sled once you pass Tech. Right after our short driver’s meeting at 8:30 am, you will be given a chance to run a hot lap until 9:00 am CST.

Wausau’s ESPN Radio is going to be at the site doing live remotes. If you are interviewed on the air, I hope you will present a positive image of the races, the track, our sponsors, and the MASTERS Racing Circuit.

ALL Registration will be done on FRIDAY NIGHT, January 7th, 2011 at Ed and Sharon’s Banquet Hall. NO REGISTRATION will take place on Saturday Morning! The Charts for each class will be done on Friday Night. We will have a Driver’s Meeting Friday Night, then a short Driver’s Meeting on Saturday Morning at 8:30 am Central Time. Racing will begin at 9:00 am with Stock.

A Groomer will be at the site to keep the track smooth. We will ONLY do Grooming when neccessary and it will ONLY be done in between classes. We do NOT groom the track WITHIN a class.

Just like the past 15 years, we run the qualifying rounds in each class up through the Quarterfinals. Then we go to the next class. Semi-Finals and Features in each class will not run till the end of the day. From Semi-Final to Feature you will be given some time (around 2 minutes) for cool-down, just as we have over the years.

Top 3 sleds will then go through a final Tech Inspection. If anyone is caught breaking our rules, you not only will forfiet ALL of your awards, but you will forfiet ALL of your points and possibly the chance to compete in future MASTERS Racing Circuit events.

At the end of the races, MASTERS Officials will work on the cash payback and trophies. We will hand out the cash to the top 3 places in each class along with the trophies at the Awards Banquet. The Awards Banquet will be in the Ed and Sharon’s Banquet Hall.

Our lodging sponsor is AmericInn of Merrill. That is where the MASTERS Officials will be staying.

WINTERNATIONALS PRO Class

Registration Revision:

We are going to allow Pro Drivers to compete in 4 classes, in place of 3, providing they compete in no more then 3 classes in either Stock or Mod. You cannot enter 4 Pro Stock or 4 Pro Mod Classes. 4 Classes will be $185.00 Class Entry Fees. Those that have already sent in their Registration, can enter the extra class at the Mandatory Pro Driver’s Meeting on Friday Night, Jan. 14th at the RockHouse.

This was requested by one of our Pro Drivers to expand the entries from a maximum of 3 classes to 4. However I want to make sure those that enter 4 classes realize that we are NOT going to change the "Draw' for order if you happen to draw to run last in one class and first in the next.

ALL Winternationals Registration is DUE by Sunday Night, Jan. 9th. On Monday, Jan 10th, I will have the list of drivers that will be competing in this year’s Winternationals. Just as in the past, we will NOT accept any Registrations AFTER this coming Sunday Night, January 9th. All FEES, Registration Forms, Signed copy of the Rules MUST BE at the MASTERS Racing Offices by Sunday Night.

MASTERS Snow Drag and WINTERNATIONALS Registration Form and MASTERS Rules are attached. (At the top of this page)

See you Friday Night in Merrill, Wisconsin!

The Hard-Packed Smooth Snow Drag Track for the MASTERS Racing Circuit Snow Drag Point Series Season Opener is really taking shape. The Copper River Midnight Riders Snowmobile Club have been working on this track for the past two weeks. Your MASTERS Circuit Officers will be at the track later this week.

We have 4 lanes, of which we will rotate the 3 drivers on, plus a groomed return lane.

Now the track is located just east of where M-107 and M-64 split on the southwest side of Merrill, in the Town of Corning. It is located next to Ed and Sharon’s. Fire # is 1294 Hwy 64/107. Use Mapquest or your GPS to get the specific directions from where you are coming.

A special thanks to the Landon’s of Winning Edge for the EXCELLENT coverage and support of the MASTERS Circuit. You can get the Winning Edge FREE by clicking on...

http://www.thewinningedgemagazine.com/downloads/pdfs/tempwefile250510LR.pdf

Those that have been with the MASTERS Racing Circuit over the past 15 years know that I send out Press Releases of results of all our events...however not every Media outlet prints or airs the results. However, the Winning Edge ALWAYS has posted our results, again I cannot thank the Landon’s for all they have done for the MASTERS and our sport.

Now that the MASTERS has taken up the suggestion of many drivers over the years and brought back a Points Series for Drag Racing, we are hoping that you will help us in getting a good turnout of drivers at the Wisconsin State Championship Snow Drags, just outside of Merrill, Wisconsin. As everyone knows that first event at a new sight is extremely important to the future of that event and the Points Series.

The MASTERS has invited “Non-MASTERS” Sanctioned events to participate in the Points Series by simply putting $ in from the Class Fees to the End of the Year Point Fund. Providing that the date of the “Non-MASTERS” Sanctioned event does not compete with the 3 races that we currently have on the schedule. If you are a part of a Snow Drag Race or know people/organization that is, ask them to participate in the Points Series. This enhances the event, and really helps the sport of Snow Drag Racing.

Don’t forget, the Wisconsin State Championship Snow Drag Championship’s official Lodging Sponsor is the AmericInn of Merrill. Please book your reservations at the AmericInn and help us by supporting all our great sponsors of this event!

Friday Night, Jan. 7th at Ed and Sharon’s we will have the Driver’s Meeting and the “Draw” as to who you will race against in the first heats. This will start at 7:00 pm CST. ALL Registration Fees, Registration Forms, and Signed copy of the Rules must be handed in at that meeting.

If you have any questions, feel free to

If you can print a copy of the attached poster and put this up, that would really help us out!

Thanks everyone!

From all of us in the MASTERS Racing Circuit, we want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and ask that we all remember to keep CHRIST in Christmas.

The Sno Drag Points Series Opener is coming up quickly. The FANTASTIC people of the Copper River Midnight Riders Snowmobile Club have been grooming the track already. They have secured sponsors to help defray many of the costs. The MASTERS Staff will be in FULL STRENGTH. We will have Kenny Kolitsch, Josh Nicholas, Wayne Soderbeck in Tech. Heading up the Officials will be Karen Solberg.

Pre-Race Registration is going on NOW. You can Register at the Driver’s Meeting on Friday Night, January 7th, 2011, at Ed & Sharon’s. Everyone that Pre-Registers or Registers on Friday Night will be in Double Elimination. Any late entries will go to Single Elimination. Charts will be made up with the drivers draw on Friday Night.

We are going to have Wausau’s ESPN Radio ON SITE doing Live Broadcasts. Any of our TOP DRIVERS (those that took first in the past) that would like to be interviewed BEFORE the event on Wausau’s ESPN Radio, that ARE GOING TO BE IN MERRILL, let me know. Drop me an e-mail with your daytime phone number, so I can pass this on to Wausau’s ESPN Radio 100.5 FM. I would rather have them interview the drivers then myself. While the MASTERS Racing Circuit is owned by myself and Jason/Tanya Kleinschmidt, this is a DRIVERS Circuit, and I want to promote the Drivers!

You will also find more information on the attached poster. If you could print it out and put it up, that would REALLY HELP US OUT!

Remember the Points Series STARTS in Merrill. Points go based upon drivers entered in the class.

1st Place, 2 pts + Total drivers in the class
2nd Place, subtract one from the Total in the class
3rd Place, subtract two from the Total in the class
4th Place, subtract three from the Total in the class....and so forth.

End of the Year payout in the classes will be to the Top 3 in each class.

We will have a quick Driver’s Meeting on Saturday Morning at 8:30 am CENTRAL Time. Small to Big is the order, Stock to Modified. We run the class all the way to the Quarterfinals, then go to the next class. End of the day we run the Quarterfinals and Semi-Finals in each class, then we run the Features/Finals from small to big, Stock to Mod. Pro Mod Open has a guaranteed 1st Place payout of $500.00 from the Copper River Midnight Riders Snowmobile Club.

The Children’s 120 cc class will run in between the Stock and Mod Divisions.

Those that have run in the MASTERS over the past 15 years, know how good of a purse the MASTERS pays out. Part of your entry fees at each race go to the End of the Year Point Fund.

Ed and Sharon’s is located on Wisconsin Highway 64/107, in the Town of Corning. This is Southwest of Merrill, between Wausau and Merrill. Fire number N1294, Hwy 64/107. Either use your Car GPS or go to Mapquest for specific Directions.

Everything is looking GREAT for the MASTERS Racing Circuit Snow Drag Points Series Season Opener in Merrill, Wisconsin, on Saturday, January 8th. Attached you will find the poster for the Wisconsin State Snow Drag Championships in Merrill. If you have the capability, it would be great if you could print this off and put it up somewhere in your area.

This is an event that the MASTERS has been working on for the past 2 1/2 years. Now we NEED a good turnout of drivers to show this area what a Sanctioned Snowmobile Drag Race can do for the area. As everyone knows, that first year is the most difficult. We need to prove ourselves. That is why I am asking you to PLEASE enter to race, or simply help us by getting the word out.

The Wisconsin State Snow Drag Championships will be run EXACTLY as we have been running the races in Sidnaw. This will be on HARD PACKED GROOMED Snow. The Groomer will be on the grounds to groom the track as neccessary. 500 Feet, 3 lanes.

Our official lodging for this event is the AmericInn of Merrill. 800-634-3444.

Masters Snow Drag Series Season Opener

With the Copper River Midnight Riders Snowmobile Club signing on as the major sponsor of the Wisconsin State Championship Snow Drags, the MASTERS Snow Drag Series opener is set for Saturday, January 8th, 2011. The races will be outside of Merrill, Wisconsin, in the town of Corning. The specially prepared and groomed snow surface will be located next to Ed & Sharon’s.

The 500 foot, three lane track, will feature racing in both Stock and Modified Divisions, including a special 120cc Class. The Copper River Midnight Riders Snowmobile Club will have a $500.00 1st Place cash award to the winner in the Open Mod Class. The cash and trophy purse is estimated to be over $3,000.00.

G & J Construction of Merrill, Ed and Sharon’s, AmericInn of Merrill, will join the Copper River Midnight Riders as sponsors that have already signed up to support the races. Organizers of the race are hoping to add additional sponsors to secure this race for many years to come.

This race, along with the Snow Drags in Sidnaw, Michigan on February 12th, and the Snow Drags in Munising, Michigan on Sunday, March 6th, will have racers competing for points at each race. The top 3 drag racers in points at the end of the year will receive additional cash purse.

Registration for the MASTERS Racing Circuit Snow Drag Series season opener will be on the circuit’s webpage, www.mastersracing.net with all racers required to be at the mandatory driver’s meeting on Friday Night, January 7th, at Ed and Sharon’s. Drivers will be allowed to register for the races that Friday Night.

“We are excited to host the MASTERS Snow Drag Series opener, and hope that we can get local drivers to compete against those that have been racing in the MASTERS Circuit in the past,” stated Copper River Midnight Riders Vice President, Jason Kleinschmidt.

Kleinschmidt added that the club and organizers of the races are still looking for additional sponsors to help with race expenses, “while we are proud to be the major sponsor and thank Ed and Sharon’s and the AmericInn for helping out, we need sponsors to help defray the other costs associated with a Professionally sanctioned snowmobile race.”

“This is something our Circuit has been looking at for a number of years. We just had to find the club, land, and people, to put on a race this big,” stated MASTERS Racing Circuit President, Skip Schulz. “It's great to bring the MASTERS to the Merrill area,” added Schulz.

MASTERS stands for Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers. This circuit has been around for over 15 years, and is one of the longest lasting Snowmobile Drag and Hillcimb circuits in the entire Midwest.

Pre-Registration Friday Night, January 7th at Ed and Sharon’s. Driver’s Meeting at 8:30 am CST. Hot Runs at 9:00 am CST. Competition to begin at 10:00 am CST.
